Big emphasis on body shaping

Syneron introduced the next generation Velashape III with a workshop featuring Drs Shimon Eckhouse, Jason Pozner and Chris Inglefield. According to Jason Pozner, a plastic surgeon in Boca Raton, FL, ‘The new Velashape® III platform has more power, requires fewer treatments, and [has] a sleek new design. This is a hotter device so it heats up the tissue in less time and works better. It is a major advancement in non-invasive body shaping and cellulite reduction.’

Inglefield shared his extensive experience with the UltraShape® V3 that uses acoustic waves of ultrasonic energy to target subcutaneous fat at a controlled depth.

There were many talks covering expanded indications for Zeltiq®’s Coolsculpting®, including upper arms. Dermatologists Dieter Manstein and Gilly Munavalli showed some very impressive results for gynaecomastia in a single treatment session. Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon from Marina Del Rey, CA, also hosted a breakfast symposium about the business of CoolSculpting®.

Special sessions

A new Home-Use Devices Symposium featured physicians and industry experts and attracted a lot of attention from delegates. Topics covered included fractional lasers, light based devices, skin rejuvenation, hair removal, IPL and ultrasound.

Other sessions were devoted to debate and controversy, including the always popular ‘Fact or Fiction’ discussion. A Tips and Tricks session led by Lapidoth attracted a lot of practitioners eager to learn new ways to expand the indications of devices and increase profitability.

Vleggaar moderated an interesting and thought-provoking panel called ‘Analyzing Beauty: The Face’, with Drs Weinkle and Wanitphakeedecha. The panel explored what is beauty, understanding facial anatomy and the evolution of the Asian look.

Solta Medical sponsored an educational symposium called ‘Solta Solutions – Contour and Clear Your Ways to Clinical Success with Liposonix®, Thermage®, and Fraxel®’ featuring Drs Katz and Zachary.

ESLD Industry Forum

Hosted by the President of European Society of Laser Dermatology (ESLD), Dr Moshe Lapidoth, this year’s topic was ‘Our Best Device and Why’. Lapidoth challenged seven companies to showcase their best device and convince the audience of its clinical efficacy. Participants included Shimon Eckhouse of Syneron-Candela, Martin Kissinger of Cutera, Leo Goo of Lutronic, Bill Kelly for Cynosure Palomar, Clint Carnell of Myoscience, Michael Oakes of NeoGraft, and Gary Wilson for Ellman International.

‘Among the most important launches, Myoscience presented Iovera®, a new procedure to use focused cold therapy for the reversible inactivation of a frontal nerve in order to achieve a reduction of the mimic muscle activity as the only alternative to botulinum toxin,’ said Klaus Fritz, MD, dermatologist from Landau, Germany.

Other innovations included the upcoming introduction in the EU of a Pelleve RF Wrinkle Reduction body probe. This large diameter treatment tip can be used for skin tightening and cellulite treatment, thus adding to the value and versatility that Ellman International’s portfolio of devices offers.
