The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery, is launching three new awards through their research centre.

The AAFPRS awards for research are made possible through the successful efforts of the Many Faces of Generosity Capital Campaign. The awards will give members a needed resource to further their training in conducting research, provide funds to expand research efforts, and provide opportunities for members and industry to collaborate in discovery. They comprise two grant mechanisms and one scholarship:

  • The Research Scholar Award: Candidates recognised for their potential to make a significant contribution to the profession of facial and reconstructive surgery. A $30,000 grant awarded annually, and potentially renewable for an additional 2 years
  • The AAFPRS Clinical Investigation Award: Offered twice per year for smaller projects as a grant of $2500
  • The Facial Plastics Clinical Research Scholarship: The $15,000 award allows recipients to study clinical research design, data management, statistical analysis, and manuscript and grant preparation through an approved programme of their choice.

‘Research generates the foundation for clinical advancement,’ said Robert M. Kellman, past-President of the AAFPRS. ‘This is true for facial plastic surgery, just as it is for other clinical specialties. We are excited to honour members who are working toward clinical innovations in our field.’

The valuable opportunities that come about through grants enhance the facial plastic and reconstructive specialty by supporting additional scientific training for future leaders. These grants also deliver added funding options in an era of shrinking government resources.
